Home Schooling in Switzerland

In Switzerland, the Code Civile Suisse of 10 December 1907 puts the onus of ensuring that a child is educated on the parents, who should also assure the physical, intellectual and moral well-being of the child. This has been interpreted differently at a local level. In an investigation by Marti (1991), it was discovered that home education is not allowed in only two cantons, Schaffhausen and Ticino; in these two cantons, home education is admissible for children with individual educational needs. In eleven cantons, it is necessary to have the permission of the education authorities, while in a further six, it is sufficient to declare an intention to home educate to the education authority, submitting an intended programme of study.

Educational Activities in Switzerland

Zurich Area
Technorama - Science Center in Winterthur (20 minutes from Zurich) highly recommended - something for every age group and one visit is NOT enough time to see or experience all that they have to offer.

Lucerne
Verkehrshaus in Lucern - (the transportation museum) "We never get tired of going there."

Aargau
Aarau Nature Museum - city of Aarau. I was not expecting much but boy was I surprised. I enjoyed it and so did the boys. Täglich ausser Montag 10:00 - 17:00 Uhr Mediothek Dienstag - Freitag 13:30 - 17:00 Uhr They have exhibits covering everything from models of an actual-sized T-Rex and a Mammoth, to the solar system, insects, birds and lots of animals, both extinct and current. Many of the animals have been stuffed, and next to them they also display a skeleton of the animal. There was an exhibit about earthquakes and the tectonic plates (and this area had lots of button to push and things that lit up - my four-year-old loved this part!) There was an exhibit that showed an entire live ant hill encased in clear plastic. There were also displays of spiders, beetles and snails. (Warning, if you also have a squeamish 11 yo dd, you may want to skip this part. Or, do what we did and park her with the microscopes and slides in the adjacent room!) We also enjoyed all the full sized animals that most small children would recognize: Giraffe, rhino, zebra, rabbits, etc.

Basel
Munster, Kaiser Augst, the Basel Art Museum, the Toy Museum, and just today, the Natural History Museum

Read a Quote
N.C. Wyeth:
Every mother's son of us is born with that supreme gift of individual perception, but the sheeplike tendency of human society soon makes inroads on a child¹s unsophistications, and then popular education completes the dastardly work with its systematic formulas, and away goes the individual, hurling through space into that hateful oblivion of mediocrity.² -- N.C. Wyeth
Note: each of his five children received individual instruction after starting in a nearby Montessori school, where classroom work was tailored to the individual child¹s particular talents and gifts. Subsequent individual tutors were hired, including Christian Sanderson of Chadds Ford. Wyeth thereby sought to liberate his children from the ³menace of all organized schools and colleges.² One became an engineer for duPont (inventing the plastic soda pop bottle we use today); daughter, Ann, became a musician and composer (playing solo piano in the Philadelphia Symphony at age 17); and three became artists (Henriette, Carolyn, and Andrew Wyeth).

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
